Sonia King, President of the Society of American Mosaic Artists, came to Australia to run a three day workshop on Sat 13th, 14th and 15th of December 2003.
The workshop was a huge success, with participants learning from a true mosaic master, and even creating masterpieces of their own under her watchful eye!
The workshop was a mixed media mosaic workshop so participants were able to bring in anything they wished to work with - glass, ceramic, pebble, smalti etc. And fmembers of MAANZ received a 10% discount on any materials purchased from the Madness Shop for use in the Sonia King workshop! What did the three day program with Sonia cover?
Day 1: Getting inspired with Sonia
Discussion of essential mosaic basics including materials, adhesives, substrates and tools.
Demonstration of cutting techniques and ergonomics.
Slide show featuring contemporary mosaics from around the world
and including a discussion of the use of various materials and their contribution to the design.
Discussion of design issues. Working on your design and selection of materials.
Day 2: Begin Creative Process
Demonstration using cement-based adhesive to achieve various textures.
Begin creative process, with individual assistance.
Additional discussions, while working, include safety, textural issues, tone and contrast.
Day 3:Continuation of creative process.
Last hour of class. Review of everyone's creation with discussion/critique on what worked and what we learned from the process.
