Stobie Poles

Common Unity – Wild at Heart adorn Stobie Poles in South Australia
South Australia’s iconic Stobie Poles are being transformed into colourful community art. Local mosaic artists and community members are turning grey concrete power poles into vibrant landmarks that reflect culture, heritage, and connection.
Three projects are combined: Firstly, Common Unity - Wild at Heart in conjunction with the last Symposium in Geelong, secondly the Stobie Pole Movement and thirdly, the MAPEI–MAANZ Pilot Community Mosaic Project.
A developing network of communities throughout South Australia is sharing:
-
application knowledge how to get permits from SA Power Networks,
-
tile exchange amongst groups,
-
workshops introducing beginner Stobie Pole makers into the techniques to design and attach mosaics.
-
expert product training from MAPEI’s Paul Buckley taught participants the use of industry-grade materials to create long-lasting, weather-resistant mosaics.
The movement is growing fast—towns like Keyneton, Cambrai, and Cummins in SA are now part of this expanding network of more than 20 groups.
The project not only enriches public space but also fosters mental health, tourism, and creativity. QR codes on the poles will soon link to each group’s story. MAPEI gains real-world product visibility while supporting community growth.
Keep your eyes peeled—public art is powering up!
