Eligibility

Applicants for the award must be an emerging artist and will give preference to those who meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • aged 30 or under, or

  • identify as First Nations, or

  • is experiencing disadvantage.

MAANZ defines ‘emerging artist’ as someone who is in the first five years of their professional career (typically under 5 years) and who is actively developing their practice through making, exhibiting, networking, training, and seeking opportunities.  An emerging artist may be undertaking or have recently completed specialised training or study.

MAANZ does not have a single narrow definition of ‘disadvantage’.  In common with many other visual arts organisations, by ‘disadvantaged’, we mean artists who face structural, financial or cultural barriers to sustaining their practice and who are therefore under-represented in MAANZ.  This can include:  artists with low incomes, artists with disability, artists from cultural and linguistically diverse backgrounds, artists in crisis (e.g. experiencing unexpected disruption due to natural disasters), and artists who are under-represented in MAANZ.

Applicants MUST be members of MAANZ.  You can join MAANZ at the time of applying for the Travel Award, if you are not already a member.
