In this two-day workshop with internationally acclaimed artist and author Bonnie Fitzgerald, participants explore the beauty and versatility of smalti, a handcrafted enamelled glass used for centuries in architectural and fine art mosaics. Grounded in traditional mosaic practice and shaped by a contemporary lens, the workshop introduces the different types of smalti, where they come from, and practical cutting techniques using wheeled nippers, with the option to also work with hammer and hardie. Participants will work in the direct method, beginning with a simple introductory study that helps build a hands-on understanding of how smalti behaves within a cement bedding.
The second project is a more developed piece, inspired by an Australian flower, allowing participants to apply their skills with greater intention and expression. Additional materials - including stone, filati, and millefiori will be available to support colour exploration, texture, and individual artistic voice.
This workshop is suitable for those wishing to deepen their technical knowledge while creating resolved, expressive mosaic work.

Working with these creative constraints makes the process surprisingly freeing, sharpening your decision making and letting you focus on the magic of form, movement and light.
This workshop isn’t about rushing to finish a piece, it’s about building a toolkit you can take into every mosaic you make, with more confidence and artistic control. Expect lots of “aha” moments, discussion, and plenty of practical exercises along the way.
