Session BF1, BF2:  From the Ground Up: Mosaic Materials and Methods with Bonnie Fitzgerald

This workshop introduces the essential materials, tools, and fabrication methods used in contemporary mosaic art. Designed for beginner and intermediate artists, it offers a fast-paced, interactive foundation in studio practice. You'll start with substrates - what they are, how they behave, and how to cut them to size, before moving into adhesives and when each is most effective. Participants will experiment with widely available tesserae while learning safe, confident tool handling through live demonstrations and guided practice. Additional topics include interior and exterior considerations, installation methods, and finishing techniques. By day's end, you'll complete four small studies and be ready to continue your mosaic exploration.

Basic mosaic tools required with a list to follow. Your tutor will be in touch with you via email prior to the workshop with what to bring.

Session RD1, RD2:  Abstract Mosaics Inspired by Nature with

Rachel Davies

When:  Saturday 10 October OR Sunday 11 October 2026, 9:00am - 5:00pm (including breaks) 1 day - 8 hours

Session type:  Hands-on | Max no of students: 18 | Level: All Levels

Cost:  $420 (includes $45 materials fee)

In this workshop with Rachel Davies, you'll explore how to develop abstract mosaic designs drawn from the patterns, rhythms, and textures of the natural world. Working from a photographic reference, you'll progress through guided exercises that help you distil key visual elements and translate them into a compelling abstract design. You'll then create a mosaic using a range of materials such as slate, stone, and glass, experimenting with how each can contribute surface, structure, and texture. Throughout the session, Rachel will demonstrate creative material approaches and support you in developing a personal, nature-inspired abstract language in your work.

Basic mosaic tools required with a list to follow. Your tutor will be in touch with you via email prior to the workshop with what to bring.

Session MK1, MK2:  Know Your Lines: Andamento in Action with

Michael Kruzich

When:  Saturday 10 October OR Sunday 11 October 2026, 9:00am - 5:00pm (including breaks) 1 day - 8 hours

Session type:  Hands-on | Max no of students: 18 | Level: Intermediate / Advanced. Students must have prior knowledge of andamento and sdoppiamento.

Cost:  $410 (includes $35 materials fee)

Many mosaicists feel tempted to jump straight into cutting tesserae, yet drawing your mosaic first can unlock clarity, efficiency, and create stronger visual impact. In this workshop, andamento expert Michael Kruzich guides participants through the essential role of planning: testing and refining ideas and understanding how each choice influences the viewer's eye. Central to the session is andamento, the directional flow of tesserae that echoes natural form in figurative work and creates rhythm in contemporary or abstract designs. Through demonstrations and guided exercises, you will learn how thoughtful preparation enhances artistic intention and leads to more confident, cohesive mosaic outcomes.

All materials supplied. Your tutor will be in touch with you via email prior to the workshop with what to bring.

Session GW1, GW2:  Secrets of Filato: The Art of Micro Mosaic with Gabrielle Warr

When:  Saturday 10 October OR Sunday 11 October 2026, 9:00am - 5:00pm (including breaks) 1 day - 8 hours

Session type: Hands-on | Max no of students: 18 | Level: All Levels. Steady hands required

Cost:   $480 (includes $105 materials fee and toolkit)

Join Micro mosaic specialist Gabrielle Warr as she introduces the rare Filato tradition, an intricate form of mosaic art that has been a carefully guided secret for hundreds of years. Gabrielle, a Canadian-born artist based in Ravenna, has spent decades mastering and teaching this highly specialised technique. You'll learn to cut and place handmade filati, reduce larger strands, and work with appropriate bases, adhesives, and traditional stucco. Guided step-by-step, students will then create a small micro mosaic pendant using the traditional method. This workshop offers insight into both the technique's historic intricacies and its contemporary possibilities.

Your tutor will be in touch with you via email prior to the workshop with what to bring.

Session DK1:  Monet in Pixels: Stained Glass Mosaic with

Inspired by the luminous colour of Monet, this workshop introduces a fresh, pixelated approach to mosaic art. You'll work from a photograph and learn how to manually pixelate the image with no software needed, before recreating it in stained glass using the direct method on a temporary backing. This simple yet powerful technique produces bold, contemporary results. Throughout the day, you'll receive clear guidance, demonstration, and notes, and you'll complete a small mosaic approximately 9 x 12 cm. The workshop concludes with instruction on transferring your finished piece to a permanent surface.
